The Flood – Sandtray Symbol

In Sandtray therapy, The Flood is a powerful and emotionally charged symbol representing overwhelming emotions, loss of control, and sudden disruption of life as it was once known. Floods often emerge in the tray when clients are experiencing intense emotional states—grief, fear, trauma, anxiety, or stress that feels too big to contain. It can symbolize moments when boundaries are breached, stability is lost, and familiar ground no longer feels safe.

On a more challenging level, The Flood may represent feelings of drowning, chaos, devastation, or being swept away by circumstances beyond one’s control. Clients may use this symbol to show emotional overload, traumatic experiences, sudden losses, or times when coping resources feel depleted. It can also reflect the fear that emotions, once released, will be uncontrollable or destructive.

At the same time, floods carry deep potential for healing and transformation. Positively, The Flood can symbolize cleansing, release, and the washing away of what no longer serves. Just as floodwaters eventually recede, this symbol can hold space for resilience, survival, and the emergence of new landscapes. Clients may explore rebuilding, renewal, and the slow return of safety after devastation, as well as the strength discovered in enduring the storm.

In the Sandtray, The Flood allows clients to externalize intense inner experiences in a visual, contained way. It supports exploration of loss, trauma, emotional regulation, transitions, and recovery, while honoring both the destruction and the possibility of new beginnings that often follow profound change.

This miniature was requested by Robyn Reyna (Texas APT) and Katie Accola (Play Heal Grow Disaster Relief Project) to aid in replenishing the offices of play therapists whose offices were damaged or destroyed in the Central Texas Flood in July 2025. Serendipity Sand & Play Shop was honored to assist these incredible women by creating and printing 100 flood miniatures to hand out to the play therapists that were affected.
