Heart Series: Locked Heart - Large - Handpainted

Part of the Heart Series, the Locked Heart represents the complex relationship many people have with vulnerability, trust, protection, and emotional safety. Bound by chains and secured with a lock, this piece serves as a powerful visual metaphor for the ways we guard our hearts—and the stories behind why.

Each Locked Heart begins as a 3D printed design and is then individually finished by hand. The chains and lock are personally hand-painted by Bianca, making every piece slightly unique. No two hearts are exactly alike, much like the experiences and emotions they represent.

In sandtray therapy, the Locked Heart may symbolize:

Emotional Guarding – fear of vulnerability, self-protection, or the belief that one’s heart must remain locked away to stay safe.

Past Wounds – grief, heartbreak, betrayal, or trauma that continues to influence emotional openness.

Constraint & Control – feeling trapped by circumstances, relationships, expectations, or internalized beliefs.

Boundaries – the desire to preserve safety, establish limits, and protect oneself from further harm.

Healing in Progress – the gradual work of loosening emotional chains, rebuilding trust, and reclaiming parts of self.

Strength & Resilience – the reminder that even a heart carrying wounds has endured, survived, and continues forward.

The Locked Heart can represent both struggle and hope. While it may symbolize loneliness, fear, restriction, or unresolved pain, it can also reflect self-awareness, resilience, protection, and the wisdom to open one’s heart only when ready.

Whether used in sandtray, play therapy, counseling, or personal reflection, this miniature invites exploration of the barriers we build, the reasons we build them, and the possibilities that emerge when healing begins.
