Sometimes the boxes that hold us are not made of cardboard.

They are made of expectations. Labels. Rules. Assumptions. The messages we receive about who we should be, how we should act, what we should believe, or who we are allowed to become.

For years, I used “the box” as a metaphor when teaching and speaking about expectations and identity. I talked about kicking the box, standing on the box, decorating the box, carrying the box, and throwing the box. The box represented all the ways we struggle against expectations that no longer fit who we are.

Then, while teaching together, Dr. Robert Jason Grant listened to me describe all the things I did with the box and asked a simple question:

“Bianca, why don’t you burn the box?”

The question stopped me in my tracks.

I had spent so much time thinking about how to fight the box, reshape the box, or distance myself from the box that it had never occurred to me that I was still carrying it with me.

That moment became the inspiration for Burning the Box.

The figure stands tall, emerging from a burning box—not as an act of destruction, but as an act of transformation. The flames symbolize release, courage, empowerment, and the freedom that comes from no longer allowing expectations to define who you are.

What makes this miniature especially unique is the removable flame hidden inside the box. Beneath it is a small compartment designed to hold a tiny note. Write down an expectation, label, fear, limiting belief, or message you are ready to release. Place it inside the box and return the flame.

The act becomes a symbolic ritual—a reminder that some things were never meant to be carried forever.

This miniature can represent:

• Breaking free from expectations
• Personal growth and transformation
• Self-acceptance
• Authenticity
• Empowerment
• Releasing limiting beliefs
• Identity exploration
• Reclaiming your voice
• Courage to change
• Becoming who you were meant to be

Whether used in sandtray, play therapy, personal reflection, or displayed as a reminder of your own journey, Burning the Box asks:

What would happen if you stopped carrying the box?
