Gavel – Sandtray Miniature
In play therapy and sandtray work, a gavel is a powerful symbol of authority, judgment, and decision-making. Positively, it can represent fairness, justice, clear boundaries, and the resolution of conflict. Clients may use the gavel to symbolize rules that create safety, accountability that brings order, or the ability to make firm decisions and have their voice recognized.
At the same time, the gavel can carry heavier or more challenging meaning. It may reflect experiences of control, power struggles, harsh judgment, or fear of punishment. For some clients, the gavel represents external authority figures, rigid systems, or moments when they felt silenced, overruled, or unfairly judged. It can also symbolize internalized criticism or pressure to “get it right.”
As a versatile sandtray piece, the gavel invites exploration of structure, rules, responsibility, and balance between power and compassion. It can support conversations around accountability, consequences, boundaries, and the impact of decisions—both those imposed by others and those chosen for oneself. This miniature is especially useful for exploring themes related to family systems, school dynamics, legal or disciplinary experiences, and moral dilemmas within the sandtray.
