Thinking Differently: The Heart Behind Our Neurodiversity Bundle

Thinking Differently: The Heart Behind Our Neurodiversity Bundle

Some bundles come together quickly. Others take time, reflection, and a bit of rediscovery. The Neurodiversity Bundle was one of those for me.

This bundle is deeply personal.

As a neurodivergent individual and the parent of a neurodivergent child, the experiences represented here are not just professional observations or clinical concepts. They are part of everyday life in our home. They are the ways our brains process the world, the ways we learn to navigate it, and the ways we continue to grow in understanding ourselves.

The Beginning of the Idea

When I began revamping this bundle, I knew right away that it needed to reflect the neurodivergent experience in an authentic way.

Some pieces came to me immediately.

The Infinity Symbol felt like a natural starting point. It is a widely recognized symbol of neurodiversity and represents the beautiful variety of human minds.

I also loved the idea of a symbol for Thinking Differently. Neurodivergent brains often move in multiple directions at once—ideas branching, connections forming, thoughts racing in ways that are creative and unique, but sometimes overwhelming. I wanted a piece that visually captured that experience.

Another element I knew needed to be included was a symbol representing how our brains are wired differently. That idea resonates deeply with many neurodivergent individuals. Different wiring does not mean something is broken—it simply means our minds process and connect information in unique ways.

And then there was the Mask.

As someone who masked hard for most of my life, I knew a mask had to be part of the bundle. Masking is a reality for many neurodivergent individuals—learning to hide parts of ourselves to navigate environments that may not understand how our brains work. It can be protective, but it can also be exhausting.

When I Got Stuck

But after those initial ideas, I found myself stuck.

Which was honestly a little funny to me later.

Even though this bundle represents my own lived experience, I suddenly felt like I was drawing a blank on what else belonged.

So I reached out to someone whose insight I knew would help: Dr. Robert Jason Grant.

Dr. Grant has done incredible work in the play therapy field around neurodiversity, and I knew he would understand the vision behind what I was trying to create. As we talked through the concept, he helped identify several additional pieces that brought the bundle together.

He suggested headphones, a winding path, a sensory item, and a tablet.

And that’s when I had to laugh at myself.

Those were all things I already use.

Headphones for sensory regulation.
Fidget or sensory tools for grounding and focus.
Technology as a communication or processing support.
And the winding path that reflects how neurodivergent journeys are often anything but linear.

They were so much a part of my everyday life that I had completely overlooked them when designing the bundle.

Sometimes the things closest to our lived experience are the easiest to miss.

Once those pieces were added, the bundle finally felt complete.

Symbols in the Neurodiversity Bundle

Each miniature in the Neurodiversity Bundle represents a different part of the neurodivergent experience:

  • Infinity Symbol – representing neurodiversity identity and pride

  • Wired Differently (Brain) – symbolizing unique neural pathways

  • Mask – representing masking and social adaptation

  • Tablet with Loading Symbol – reflecting processing time and communication tools

  • Dopamine Chemical Symbol – representing motivation, curiosity, and reward systems

  • Headphones – symbolizing sensory regulation and focus

  • Fidget / Sensory Item – representing grounding and self-regulation

  • Thinking Differently – symbolizing divergent thinking and creativity

  • Winding Road – representing the non-linear journeys many neurodivergent individuals experience

Together, these symbols help create a visual language for conversations about identity, regulation, strengths, and challenges.

From Idea to Miniature

With the exception of the headphones, each miniature in this bundle began as an idea I imagined and sketched. Quan then brought those concepts to life through 3D design, and I printed the final pieces. Seeing these symbols move from imagination to tangible miniatures has been one of the most meaningful parts of creating this bundle.

Why This Bundle Matters

Of all the bundles we have created at Serendipity, this one may be my favorite.

Not because it is the most elaborate, but because it reflects something deeply meaningful in my own life. It reflects my experience, my child’s experience, and the experiences of so many individuals who are learning that thinking differently is not something that needs to be fixed.

It is something that deserves to be understood.

As both a neurodivergent individual and a parent of a neurodivergent child, this bundle means more to me than simply creating another set of miniatures. It represents the everyday experiences of thinking differently, learning what helps us regulate, and recognizing that our paths may not look the same as those around us.

My hope is that these symbols help therapists and clients create space for conversations about identity, strengths, challenges, and self-understanding.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is create space for people to be exactly who they already are.
